Using Gamification to Enhance eLearning Engagement at\u00a0Learning Solutions Conference – March 20, 2014<\/span><\/h1>\n

Have you ever heard the term \u201cgamification\u201d? In short, gamification is the use of gameplay mechanics for non-game applications. \u00a0It\u2019s an action-reward system that captures people\u2019s attention and increases engagement. In the eLearning world, gamification is the use of game mechanics to \u2018gamify\u2019 content that engages and entices users by encouraging and rewarding use.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Gamifiaction<\/span>\u200bCreating engaging eLearning content is one of the greatest challenges facing online educators. In my presentation, <\/span>Utilizing Gamification to enhance eLearning Engagement<\/strong>, at the upcoming <\/span>Learning Solutions Conference<\/a> in Orlando, I will be speaking about the use of gamification techniques as an extremely effective way to ensure that learners enjoy the learning experience and thus remain engaged with courses. Gamification has been one of the most talked about concepts in eLearning over the past few years, but very rarely have we seen practical and affordable application of the theories presented.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are many resources on the internet that can also help you better understand \u00a0gamification. For example, the elearning Guild published a report by Brenda Enders discussing games and gamification for learning which you can download from here<\/a>. However, my presentation will provide you with the most important theoretical aspects of gamification that are applicable to enhancing eLearning in a meaningful way. You will see practical, real-world solutions to utilizing gamification techniques. Examples will include using gamification techniques within online courses as well as using games as motivational rewards. Open Badges will be explained, as well as how to combine them with leaderboards and points within eLearning. Additionally, you will see how customizable user avatars can be used to significantly encourage ongoing course engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n
